Session 5 Assignment

This session serves to reflect on the research methods that you envisage to use in your research project. For this purpose, we invite you to reflect on the methods that would enable you to reach your research objectives and answer your research questions.

Read either:

• For the social scientists: Verschuren and Doorewaard, chapter 6, pp. 155-202 (with a focus on pp. 155-161)
• For the lawyers: the chapter by McInerney-Lankford, ‘Legal Methodologies and Human Rights Research’, who presents a relevant list of theoretical and methodological questions in the Annex to the chapter. If you have time, you may read the chapter by Bhat, ‘Analytical Legal Research for Expounding the Legal Wor(l)d’ as well.

Prepare the assignment in 3 steps

1. Revise and align your research objective, research framework and research questions on the basis of the feedback received in previous sessions.
2. Describe the research methods that you wish to use in your research project.
3. Answer the following questions regarding the research methods and provide a reasoning for your answer:

• • Why do you consider the research methods appropriate for achieving your research objectives?
  • How do these research methods align with the research perspective (theoretical framework) that you have chosen for your research project?
  • How do these research methods enable you to answer the research questions that you have formulated?
